Blackout Survival

Survival Hard WASD + E 2–6 minutes

Blackout Survival is built around a rhythm you cannot negotiate with. Every forty seconds the power fails for around twelve seconds. You know it is coming, you can see the countdown, and there is nothing you can do to prevent it — only to be somewhere sensible when it happens.

How to Play Blackout Survival

  1. Press Start. A countdown to the first blackout appears in the HUD immediately.
  2. During lit periods, move freely and memorise generator positions and crowd density.
  3. When the blackout hits, zombies reveal themselves with brief pings roughly once per second.
  4. Stand on a generator and hold E (or the Use button) for two seconds to restore power early.
  5. Contact with any zombie ends the run, lit or not.

Objective

Survive as long as possible through repeated blackout cycles. Restarting generators shortens the dark periods but requires crossing unlit ground.

About Blackout Survival

During lit periods the game plays like a fairly ordinary survival game: open space, visible zombies, straightforward movement. That period exists so you can bank information. Where are the generators, where is the crowd densest, which corner is currently empty. All of it becomes the map you navigate from memory twelve seconds later.

During a blackout, zombies emit brief location pings — a soft pulse of light at their position every second or so. It is enough to avoid them if you were already paying attention and nowhere near enough to navigate from scratch. This is the mechanic that makes the lit period matter.

Restarting a generator during a blackout restores light early and resets the countdown, which is the only real agency you have over the cycle. Generators are placed far apart deliberately, so committing to one is a genuine gamble: you are crossing dark ground on remembered information to buy back the thing that would have told you whether the crossing was safe.

Blackout Survival Tips & Strategy

  1. Spend the last five seconds before a blackout moving to open ground, not toward a pickup.
  2. Memorise two generator positions during every lit period, not one. The nearest may be crowded.
  3. During a blackout, move in short bursts between pings rather than continuously.
  4. Only commit to a generator run if you saw the route clear in the last few seconds of light.
  5. If you are caught in the open when the lights go, stop moving. Standing still is safer than blind running.
  6. The countdown is the most important number on the screen. Check it more often than the zombies.

Features

  • Fixed blackout cycle with a visible countdown
  • Zombie location pings during dark periods
  • Generators that restore power early at real risk
  • Lit periods that function as information-gathering phases
  • Audio cues that meaningfully supplement the visual pings

Blackout Survival — FAQ

Can I prevent the blackouts?
No. The cycle is fixed and unavoidable. Restarting a generator ends the current blackout early and resets the countdown, but the next one will still come.
How do I find zombies in the dark?
Each zombie emits a brief light ping roughly once per second, plus an audio cue when close. Neither is enough to navigate blind — they are there to confirm what you already suspected from the lit period.
How long is a blackout?
About twelve seconds by default, shortening slightly as the run progresses so late-game blackouts are more frequent but not longer.
Is this the same as Night Survivor?
No. Night Survivor is permanently dark with a directional torch, so it is about actively looking. Blackout Survival alternates between full information and none, so it is about memory and timing.
